A Glimpse Through the Years
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority
(DEWA) was formed on 1 January,
1992, by a decree issued by His Highness
Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al
Maktoum to take over and merge the Dubai
Electric Company and the Dubai
Water Department that had been operating
independently for several years
until then. Both these organizations were
established in 1959 through the
foresight and initiative of His Highness
Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al
Maktoum, the late Ruler of Dubai, as government
supported bodies with the
objective of making available to the people
of Dubai an adequate and reliable
supply of electricity and water.
Dubai Electricity
Company
In the year 1959, His Highness Shaikh Rashid
bin Saeed Al Maktoum issued
a decree to establish the Dubai Electricity
Company (DEC) with the objective
of generating electricity and transmitting
and distributing it to consumers in
Dubai. The Company set up its first office
in a rented house near Al Nasr
Square, Deira, and soon after started to
supply electricity to its first
consumer. Thus started the operations of
a dynamic organization that was to
play a pivotal role in spurring the growth
and development of Dubai, ushering
in a bright era for its people.
